i don’t see enough appreciation for closeted lesbians. i’m thinking of lesbians who can’t dress they way the want, or style their hair how they wish. i’m thinking about the lesbians who entertain coversations about relationships with men, or dodge questions about their dating life from family members. i’m thinking about the lesbians who have to keep their relationships secret. i’m thinking about lesbians who don’t really understand lesbian terminology and have no one to ask. i’m thinking about the lesbians who are just coming to understand their sexuality and are scared, confused, and worried. i’m thinking about the lesbians who can’t consume lgbt media and have very little positive representation, if any. i’m thinking about the lesbians who have never met anyone else like them before. i’m thinking about trans lesbians who are consistently misgendered. i’m thinking about the lesbians who are only out to a close circle of friends. i’m thinking of lesbians who are closeted because they’re dependent on others for housing, food, medication, clothing, etc.

to ALL closeted lesbians, i see you and i hold a very special place for you in my heart. protecting your safety does not make you any less valid as a lesbian. your safety and your survival always come first.

i hate this weird sense of internalized queerphobia of like. being visibly and really loudly queer is somehow immature and childish and one day you’ll grow up and fall into cishet line and stop

#conforming is not synonymous with maturity

I love you so much for saying this

this sucks so i went looking for some gnc adults

Touchscreens do not belong in cars

And gauges and dials should be gauges and dials, not screens

Door releases should have a direct mechanical link to a latch, not send an electronic signal to a servo

You should not have to have your phone alive to unlock your car

Your ability to quickly and easily see what’s behind you while driving should not be dependent on cameras instead of mirrors.

I’m actually going to push back on that last one, @fuckyeah-nerdery: backing cameras in cars aren’t there for drivers or for manufacturers, they’re there to keep people from running over toddlers.

not even joking: car companies do not actually like backing cameras because they are the most expensive option in terms of making it easier to see what’s behind you, but cameras are the only way for a driver to see something directly behind them that’s shorter than their window. years of research showed that less expensive options – more or better mirrors, sensors, a bigger rearview window – did not work, and cameras did, which is why they’re now a mandatory feature on cars, like seatbelts.

behold my shitty drawing explaining why:

A photo of a car from above and behind. Yellow shapes show line of vision from the windows and mirrors. A stick figure toddler is too short to be in the line of vision of the rear window.ALT

we had a whole day in my admin law class about this because it was a promulgated regulation at the time. there were a lot of people in my class who were basically “RIP to those kids but I would simply teach my baby not to stand behind cars so cameras are unnecessary” as if that was the first time anyone had thought about it.

anyway, that’s a necessary safety feature like a manual lock or buttons you can feel instead of needing to look at a screen.

Oh, I’m not opposed to backup cameras. Apparently there are people who want to replace side mirrors with cameras and that just sounds like a terrible idea. I’m fine with cameras in addition to mirrors, my concern is a dangerous reliance on them and what could happen if either they or the display stops working while someone is on the interstate.

well, that’s just dumb AND expensive.

I think that what’s brilliant about The Far Side is how it can imply an entire narrative with only a single panel. It’s sequential art without the sequence. Like this one

    image

There’s the obvious implication of what’s going to happen in the future (there’s going to be a hunt), but it also stretches into the past: what circumstances in the anthropology of this group of cavemen must have happened to establish a tradition of dancing with Woolly Mammoths? Why does it, in spite of it’s obvious absurdity, feel kind of right that there should be a dance before the cavemen and the mammoths engage in mortal combat? The reluctant fearful expression on the caveman at the bottom; is this his first hunt? Are those his elders trying to reassure him? Does the one mammoth actually seem to fancy him? What about the one looking fearfully back at his friends? How does he feel that the others aren’t there to reassure him? One of the mammoths in the upper right looks just as fearful as the cavemen; why? etc.

And all of this is purely evoked. There’s only simple line-drawing and two sentences of text, but you see it and it reminds you of other sorts of narratives you’ve seen or experienced, and your brain constructs a whole temporal sequence; and any possible answer you could get to above the questions would never be as satisfying as what your brain fills in.

I could write an entire essay about this.
